Thank you to Orajel™ Kids for giving me the opportunity to share ways to make tooth brushing for preschoolers more fun.

Some of the first words out of my daughter’s mouth each morning upon waking is “Can I brush my teeth now?”.  There was a time when she wanted nothing to do with brushing her teeth or to even let me do it for her, so it makes this mama happy that she is finally enjoying it and actually wants to brush.

This post and gum health tips are brought to you by Sverve. All opinions and words are my own.

Recently I read a startling statistic: about half of Americans age 30 and older have gum disease.  Considering that gum health plays an important role in your overall health, that’s kind of a scary number.  Gum disease has been associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and diabetes, as well as having a low-weight baby or premature birth.  And if you already have any of those conditions, it can make it harder to control the disease.

The ABCs of Gum Health

With Ashley being Type 1 the word diabetes always grabs my attention when I’m reading.  And now that Sam & Abby (as well as two other cousins that recently announced) are pregnant, anything pregnancy-related tends to catch my eye, too, so this is something that really stood out to me. This oral health facts post is sponsored by Colgate Total, the American Diabetes Association, and the Mom It Forward Blogger Network.  All thoughts and words are my own.

I’ve mentioned before that Ashley is a Type 1 diabetic.  When someone you love lives with a disease like diabetes, you tend to worry.  And even after all these years of managing it, it’s not always easy for her to keep her sugars regulated.

There are so many factors that go into keeping blood sugars balanced.  What she eats, how much she sleeps, if she goes for a run – all of those can send numbers up or down.  And those are just the things she has some control over.  If she happens to get sick – something she really can’t plan for – then it can get a little scary.  In the last few years, there have been at least 2-3 trips to the emergency room each year that I can remember.

Growing up I recall hearing on many occasions the following sound:

“Argh, argh, argh!”

which was then echoed by “More power!”

You may recognize that as the catch phrase – and grunt – of a certain television handyman.  My father enjoyed watching the show, and I think that’s because he secretly thought that adding more power to pretty much anything was a good idea.  He’s quite a handy guy himself which was useful because when he helped my paternal grandfather and my maternal grandparents run their farms, you have to be ready to put equipment back together at the drop of a hat.

There’s really no reason that more power needs to be relegated solely to lawn mowers, tractors, or grills.  Why not more power for your mouth?  Power in the form of the Oral-B electric toothbrush.  I mean, who doesn’t want to up the game of their current toothbrush and put their best smile forward? A few days ago I shared with you that Champions for Kids had partnered with Spinbrush for a new SIMPLE Service Project – Spin Into Action – and that my family was excited to be participating.  Well, over the past few days we’ve also involved our family and friends to collect a donation of oral health care items.  We also made a return trip back to Walmart (you can see our entire first shopping trip here) to pick up a few additional donations of our own.

When we hit the oral health care aisle at Walmart I was glad to see that they had some of the Captain American Spinbrushes left, because it was one I really wanted to include in my donation.  They also had plenty of the My Way! Spinbrushes which I think are completely cool (really, where were all these fun toothbrushes when I was a kid?).  Since I had already picked up a Captain America one, I went with the pink My Way! one to balance it out.
