Are you an Avengers fan?

Our family is a group of huge Marvel movie fans.   We first fell in love with Iron Man a few years ago, and since then each installment of individual Avengers characters has lured us in more and more.  So it should be no surprise that the members of our household are all anxiously counting the days until next week’s release of The Avengers.  All of the Avengers together in one huge blockbuster?  It doesn’t get much better than that!

Marvel's The Avengers Graphic Novel #MarvelAvengersWMT

Both A1 and A2, as well as my husband and I, all had the chance to see The Avengers in the theater so we know it’s an amazing film.  Leaving the theater I remember both my husband and I commenting about how we couldn’t wait until it came out on DVD so that we could add it to our home library.  So that there was no chance on missing out, we were sure to pre-order a copy.  If you haven’t pre-ordered yours yet, it’s not too late!  Be sure to order from Walmart so you can get the exclusive Avengers Blu-Ray/DVD/Graphic Novel combo pack for $24.96!  Only 100,000 of the graphic novels were printed so it makes for a great collectible.  There are over 100 pages in it, as well.  We have a copy of it and the story, colors, and quality are all great.

I wanted to keep the excitement level high in our family as we waited so I thought it would be fun to have an Avengers Family Fun Night.  I decided that we’d go all out and decorate with Avengers merchandise, make Avengers-themed snacks – even watch one of the Avenger character movies, like Captain America, Hulk, Thor, or Iron Man.  After making my shopping list, I packed up Bubbles and headed to Walmart.  We had been there a couple of days earlier and noticed that the Marketside pizza boxes were supposed to have been printed with the Avengers, but the Walmart we normally shop at didn’t have those particular boxes.  So I decided to drive to a second Walmart that’s a bit further away but that usually seem to have a wider selection.  I was hoping that they would have the printed pizza boxes.

We weren’t disappointed!  They had the boxes and all our favorite characters were represented.  Hanging above the pizza was a cool sign showing all of the characters.  The most interesting thing about the sign is that it’s interactive!  You can download the Super Hero AR (Augmented Reality) app to your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone and use it as you walk around the store.  The goal is to interact with different signs and then answer questions to determine which Avenger you are.

#MarvelAvengersWMT Augmented Reality App

To use the Augmented Reality app, you simply take a picture with your phone.  There are a number of “checkpoints” located around the store, and each of the checkpoints should allow you to answer a trivia question that will help you to determine your Avenger personality.  You can also play a fun shooter game – using your own living room as the battlefield! – using the app.  Check out my Google+ Album for our entire shopping trip and app experience.

When we returned home Bubbles was excited to help me decorate for our party.  She loves balloons and as I was blowing them up, she was quickly filling her toy shopping cart with them and whisking them away.  I did get her attention for a few minutes, though, when I opened up the Avengers stickers we had bought and let her sticker the table cloth with them.

After everything was cooked and all the decorations were up, everyone dug in.  On the menu were foods based on all our Marvel favorites:

  • Black Widow Pizza (Marketside pizza topped with “spiders” made from olives)
  • Hulk Smash Potatoes (our family’s favorite crash potatoes)
  • Mini Thor’s Hammers (chicken drumsticks)
  • Hawkeye’s BBQ Sauce (Bulls-eye brand BBQ sauce)
  • Iron Man Soda (Big Red soda)
  • Avengers Decorated Cupcakes

After dinner we watched our Iron Man DVD.  If we weren’t already excited for #MarvelAvengersWMT before, we definitely were then!  I made sure that we were following Marvel on Twitter and Facebook so we wouldn’t miss any fun news (like info on the additional Marvel movies coming out!).

Did you pre-order your copy of Marvel’s The Avengers?  If not, will you be visiting Walmart this week to pick up a copy?
