A few weeks ago Louisville hosted the annual Brews, Blues & BBQ Festival.  I had never been before so when I was offered to tickets to attend, I was excited at the prospect of checking out something new.  The event was Friday night through Sunday and as Austin’s going away party was on Saturday, we planned to go on Sunday.

The weather hadn’t been exactly awesome but by the time the start of the festival rolled around on Sunday it seemed like the weather was going to cooperate for a few hours.  Apparently that wasn’t the case for the festival venue, however.  After driving through a sizable amount of water to get to the location, we were told the city had deemed it unsafe and cancelled the festival. If you’ve been around this week you may have heard that I’m kind of in a milkshake mood (and before you get all excited, Mom, that doesn’t mean I’m having cravings).  And while a good chocolate shake will always be top of my list, I do like to experiment with different flavor combinations, especially seasonal ones.  And what’s more seasonal right now than eggnog?

Am I the only one that loves milkshakes more in winter than any other time of year?  It sounds a little counter-intuitive, I know, but it’s true.  But when the temperatures drop I start craving them.

Growing up, one of the things I most looked forward to during warmer months was the dairy bar opening.  One of the local dairies in our area – Houlton Farms Dairy – would open up a small store front in a neighboring town and serve homemade ice cream, milkshakes, and other delicious offerings.  Their homemade chocolate ice cream was one of my absolute favorites.

On the menu were a few other items that I really didn’t ‘get’ as a kid – treats made with sherbet.  They didn’t contain any ice cream!  I mean, why go to an ice cream shop and not get ice cream.  As I got older, though, I completely understood:  a way to indulge without blowing your healthy goals.
