Spring showed itself here recently, with lots of sun and a few warm days. It’s really put Bubbles and I in the mood for fun spring crafts. So we went through my craft supplies and decided to make some clothespin crafts.
Bubbles loves any project that calls for googly eyes so we decided to make some clothespin dragonflies and clothespin caterpillars. We had so much fun with them that next on our list will be some clothespin butterflies, too.
These are super easy to make and took literally just a few minutes to make an entire swarm of dragonflies and caterpillars. They’d be a great craft for kids to do on spring break or even at a birthday party or sleepover. I found a lot of my supplies in the past at the Dollar Tree but I’ve also included some affiliate links below to help you find what you need.
Dragonfly & Caterpillar Clothespin Crafts
Supplies:
Clothespins
Pom Poms
Chenille stems
Googly eyes
Washi tape
Glue
Tutorial
For the caterpillars:
- Cut about 2″ off the end of a chenille stem. Slide it through the hole of a closed clothespin, fold together, and twist a few times. Use your fingers (or the end of a pencil) to bend the tips into antenna shapes.
- Select a few pom poms. You can use all one color, alternating colors, or an assortment. We did a few with the first pom pom being larger than the others, and some all being the same size. Mix it up and find the style you like best.
- Glue the pom poms to the length of the clothespins, then glue a pair of googly eyes to the front pom pom. Let dry.
For the dragonflies:
- Cover the length of a clothespin with a strip of washi tape and trim as needed.
- Fold both ends of a chenille stem inward until they touch, then twist together. Repeat with a second chenille stem.
- Place the two sets of wings on top of each other and twist together.
- Clip the wings inside the clothespin and secure with glue, if desired.
- Glue a pair of tiny googly eyes to the top of the clothespin.
You could easily attach a little magnet or magnetic tape to these guys and use them to decorate the fridge or clip up papers. Or hang a few pieces of yarn from a doorway or window casing and make a little mobile of flying critters.
