Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Remains a Stranger

This weekend I had hoped to bring you a first-hand review of Disney’s new Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.  Disney had sent me passes to attend the local premier last week and hubby and I were both excited to see the movie and nervous about the excursion as it was going to be the first time that we had both left Baby C at the since she had been born.

We had planned to have her stay with my in-laws and they were really looking forward to having her all to themselves for the night.  We thought it was the perfect arrangement: they visit often so she’s extremely familiar with them, she’s been to their house so she should be comfortable with her surroundings, and their house is only 5 minutes from the theater so in the event of a problem we could be there fast.  The imperfect part turned out to be fooling myself into thinking that I could possibly plan anything involving a 3 month old that would play out the way we envisioned.

Baby C had been a little fussy during the day which was unusual for her, but I assumed she was just a little tired from the weekend.  We got her packed up and drove up to the in-laws.  She was quiet and content for the drive but as soon as we walked into the house and undid the harness on her car seat she started to cry.  And not what normally passes for “crying” with her which is a few “eh..eh”s.  This was full-on wailing; we had honestly never heard her make sounds like that before.  She was sobbing so hard she couldn’t even catch her breath and I could barely console her.  Obviously there was no way I was going to leave her while she was upset so we got her quieted down enough to hook her into her car seat and took her home.  Her Papaw and Grammy so disappointed and were worried that she was suddenly scared of them.

In the end, we think she maybe just had some tummy troubles for the first time, because one dirty diaper and a couple of hours later she was all smiles and giggles again.

So very long story short – we still have not yet seen PotC4.  We do plan to try again on our own in a week or two, though, so hopefully I will be able to share with you then.  In the meantime if you’ve seen it please feel free to share your opinion and tell me what you thought of it.  Just no spoilers yet, please.  In case, you know, we actually make it to the theater next time.

By the way, don’t forget that today is the last day to enter to win a Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides giveaway!

Summer Vacation Travel Ideas

5 Summer Vacation Travel Ideas

Summer is knocking on our door and schools all over the country are starting to let out.  A2’s last day of school is Friday.  He’ll have football-related activities most of the summer so he won’t have much time for summer vacation trips.  Which actually works out, because Baby C is a little young to take to most vacation spots that interest a 15-year-old.

There are lots of places on our list to visit in upcoming summers, however, and many places that I’m excited to be able to experience through Baby C’s eyes as she sees them for the first time.  My in-laws were over yesterday and we got to talking about their upcoming trip to Europe this summer.  That conversation segued into talking about favorite vacation places, places everyone should see, etc.  A1 wants our next vacation to be someplace cold with mountains and a lake (but not to swim in) and A2 wants to go on a cruise in the Bahamas.  (If anyone knows of a cold, mountainous region in the Bahamas to make them both happy, let me know?)

So when SocialMoms asked today about our top five summer getaways that we feel all kids should experience, I had no problem coming up with a list.  Some of these are places I visited as a kid myself, some are places we’ve gone recently as a family, and some are places on our to-do list in the next couple of years.

Summer Vacation Travel Ideas

1)  Walt Disney World, Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

I would be totally remiss if Disney World didn’t top on my list.  I first visited Disney with my parents when I was in the 1st grade.  They had won a family trip as part of a promotion with one of the companies that my father worked with.  I remember being totally blown away as we stood looking at Cinderella’s Castle while we waited to enter the Magic Kingdom and how much I giggled as Goofy played with my hair when I got his autograph.  How much I fell in love with Figment and all the science museum-esque interactive exhibits at the end.  And how the countries were so much fun while being educational at the same time.  Disney adds new stuff frequently so there is always something new for kids to experience.

2) Boston, MA

You get a great sense of history while in Boston.  You can do everything from follow the path of Paul Revere to (if you drive a few miles outside the city) take in the home of the Salem witch trials.  There is a ton of stuff to keep kids interested and occupied, like the Children’s Museum, New England Aquarium, Museum of Science, Fanueil Hall, Fenway Park and much more.  Plus you can sample cuisine that’s local to New England, like lobster and clam chowder or a Fenway Frank.

3)  Grand Canyon

This is one that we haven’t yet experienced but is on our “must see” list.  I think that everyone should stand on the edge and be in awe and wonder of nature and what it can create and do.  The Grand Canyon is one place where nature has really made it’s mark.  You can also get in some white water rafting which is an activity that is great for kids (and adults!).  You’ll see all the grandeur up close and personal while being on an exciting thrill ride.

4)  Santa’s Village & Storyland

Up in the White Mountains are three themed amusement parts: Santa’s Village, Storyland, and Six Gun City.  My two personal favorites that are especially great for younger children are the first two I listed.  At Santa’s Village everything is (of course) Christmas themed.  Kids can feed Santa’s reindeer, meet the elves and sit on the lap of the Big Man himself.  There are also a bunch of rides and shows with winter- and Christmas-inspired names.  Be sure to stop by and get your free reindeer-shoe nail ring made as you watch by the blacksmith.  Storyland is all about Nursery Rhymes and other children’s stories.  There is Mother Goose, the Old Lady in the Shoe with all her kids, Little Miss Muffet and her tuffet, and many others.  As with Santa’s Village there are also a bunch of rides (including a water tube and a hot air balloon) that kids will love.  It’s a really fun park with a unique theme; we went a number of times when I was a kid and it never got old.

5)  Washington, D.C.

I think that everyone, kids included, should understand the history of our country and how our legislation works.  Places to see in the District of Columbia include the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Solider and the Smithsonian.  D.C. is another location that’s still on our “to do” list.  I know I’m personally most looking forward to the Smithsonian; my father went when I was younger while on a business trip and brought me back a number of souvenirs from the museum that have me itching to experience it on my own.

What would be your top five?  I’m really interested in hearing about them as we continue to make our vacation plans over the next few summers.  Anything that interests teens and/or toddlers would be especially great to know!

While most might consider June-August to “officially” be wedding season, with the royal couple tying the knot a few weeks ago, they’ve already kicked us off for the year.  On a more personal level, a cousin of mine just married his new bride last weekend.

A lot of people had really been waiting for the royal wedding, but as I’ve shared with you a few times over the past couple of months, the wedding that I personally am waiting on pins and needles for is the wedding of my brother and his lovely fiancee.  I’m part of the bridal party, so I don’t have to worry about what I’ll be wearing; the dresses have already been chosen for us.  (They’re actually quite nice as bridesmaid dresses go; I could wear it again to a party if I wanted.  Can’t say the same for every bridesmaid dress that’s tucked into the back of my closet!)

In the past, though, deciding what to wear as a guest has occasionally been a wee bit stressful.  Should I go short or long?  Do I need to (yuck) wear tights or nylons?  (Not that they can’t be adorable, I just like my legs to be bare.  Tights make me hot.)  And the major question: can I find a dress that makes me look taller than I am (5’2″), hides any flaws (is there anyone on the planet that actually loves their thighs?) and plays up my best features (Baby C has been a blessing to both my décolletage and toning my upper arms)? Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Arr, matey!  Are you as excited to see Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as I am?  I have been a fan of the franchise since the day I saw the first one announced.  I am a huge Disney fan and throw in some pirates and Mr. Johnny Depp himself?  Well, I’m there with an eye patch on!
(Fun Fact: Can you spot the “hidden Mickey” in the promotional poster above?)

PotC4 sails into theaters in Disney Digital 3D on Friday, May 20th.  Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow who, while searching for the Fountain of Youth, crosses paths with Angelica (Penelope Cruz).  She forces him onto the ship “Queen Anne’s Revenge,” the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane).  Geoffery Rush returns as Captain Barbossa and Kevin McNally reprises his role as Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs.  There are new additions to the cast, too, including Phillip (Sam Claflin), a missionary, and Syrena (Astrid Berges-Frisbey), a mysterious mermaid.

Want to see more?  Check out PotC4 on Facebook and Twitter.  And here is an extended trailer:

The black carpet world premiere was held on Saturday on Tom Sawyer Island at Disneyland in California.  Pirate Mickey was on hand to have some fun with the cast!
