Did you just purchased a new home and you’d like a few noticeable yet inexpensive updates? Or maybe like us, you’ve lived in your kitchen for a few years and you want a fresh look without breaking the bank. Whatever the case may be, you can make an impact in the kitchen for not a lot of money with these budget kitchen remodel ideas.
Budget Kitchen Remodel Ideas
Paint or stain cabinets – If you have time on your hands to do it, repainting or staining your cabinets is one of the biggest “bang for your buck” budget kitchen remodel projects you can do. All you really need is sandpaper and paint or stain. You can certainly make the process easier with a paint sprayer (I’ve seen them for under $65) but it’s not necessary.
Replace old hardware – Changing out the hardware on existing cabinets can also make a big impact on the look of your kitchen and doesn’t have to cost a lot. New knobs and pulls are an easy way to play around with current trends and can easily be changed when the trend passes. You can also show off your personal style, like paw print knobs if you’re a dog-lover.
New backsplash – There are a number of inexpensive ways to create a new backsplash. Chalkboard paint comes in a number of colors (including clear) and can give you a fun surface for a backsplash. If you’d prefer a more traditional look you can look for inexpensive stick-on tiles or metal sheets.
New trash can – Recently simplehuman sent us their 50 litre semi-round step can to try and I can’t tell you what a big difference it has made in the kitchen. It’s called “grey” but looks very much like stainless steel so it has a classy feel to it. And the combination of the steel pedal and lid shox technology lets me open it with full hands and let it close silently by itself.
Refinish countertops – Did you know that you can put down countertop veneers? I didn’t until just recently! Try laminate sheets, granite tiles, or even peel-n-stick vinyl sheets. Lots of inexpensive ways to make it look like you invested in completely new countertops!
Bonus freebie – declutter! Cleaning the clutter off countertops, moving unused kitchen appliances to other storage, and thinning out your magnet collection on the refrigerator can make your kitchen look fresh and more spacious.
What are your favorite budget kitchen remodel projects?
There are so many updates I want to make in the kitchen. I want to repaint the cabinets, it’s time to freshen them up, and I want to create some type of backsplash, thinking corrugated tin?? Maybe. And putting glass in the top cabinets. I know they are all fairly inexpensive, but want to get new laminate wood floors throughout before I make the changes, and that’s a bit more than $100!
I’ve heard that removing the doors or adding glass to the top cabinets can make a kitchen feel a lot bigger and open, too. Sounds like a great project!
A new back splash adds a lot to a kitchen space. Believe it or not my favorite kitchen upgrade was lighting. Fresh paint is another perk. Great ideas.

We really want to remodel our kitchen. there is a lot to do we need all new cabinets and to tear out the sink and bar and move the sink to a new location. I wish there was an easier fix to our kitchen problems but for now I will just settle for a clean kitchen. lol good ideas!
I’d love to do a lot of those things, too, Jenifer! Including installing a pot filler. But most days I’m just happy for a clean kitchen, too 😀
