Growing up, one of the things I most looked forward to was watching Christmas classics on TV. The 30 minute shows like Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer might not be considered technologically advanced these days, but they seemed perfect as a kid. They often aired just before Christmas – sometimes on Christmas Eve – so they also signified that the big day was just around the corner.
For some reason, it seems hard to catch the Christmas classics these days. I’m sure they air, but there isn’t the heavy advertising for them that there used to be. This means that even with a DVR we often miss them each season.
The Original Christmas Classics
So I was excited to learn that the Original Christmas Classics Blu-ray Gift Set is now available to purchase. It’s a 2-disc set that includes Frosty the Snowman, Frosty Returns, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town!, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. They’ve been restored and are now in HD – plus no commercials! With a run time of just over 150 minutes between the two discs, this is a great way to introduce your kiddos to the Christmas classics of your own youth.
New Holiday Favorites
While it’s hard to beat a classic, there are lots of great new Christmas shows and movies, too. The DreamWorks Holiday Collection fits that bill. It’s a 2-disc set that features some of your favorite DreamWorks characters. It includes four shows: Shrek the Halls, Merry Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda Holiday, and Dragons Holiday: Gift of the Night Fury and has a run time of just over 90 minutes.
There is actually some nice messaging running through these four shorts. The spirit of Christmas, spending time with family, and meaningful gifts given of love are just a few. And it was fun to see a How to Train Your Dragon short just before the How to Train Your Dragon 2, releasing in June of next year.
