When we were moving into our new place, I had to go to the town water company office to get the water, etc. transferred over to us. When I did, they offered me a free plastic recycling crate to use. We can sit it out with the trash every Tuesday, and the waste management company will pick up both for us.
While I like that they support recycling efforts, and provided the container for free, it’s not really something that I want to set in my kitchen. It’s kind of unsightly and Bubbles would be trying to load and unload it all day long. I also am pretty sure I would trip over it 19 times a day. I didn’t want to just toss everything into a paper bag or box, though; so messy and they would only be good to use a few times before they were destroyed.
So when I heard about the new Rubbermaid Hidden Recycler, I was interested. Rubbermaid has always been one of my favorite brands. They always seem to be at the head of the pack when it comes to innovation with storage and containers, and this product is no different in that regard.
I love that it’s such a neutral color; it would blend in well with most kitchens, I think. It was also very easy to install with the included hooks (which are lined with felt to protect your cabinets from being scratched), though I did have to pry the clips apart just a bit to get them on. And our cabinets have angled edges, so it’s not a flat fit. If you prefer a little permanency, or if you have thick/angled doors, you can use screws to mount the recycler. We haven’t lived here long enough to fill every nook and cranny, so there was plenty of room in the cabinet under the sink, but you may need to spend a couple of minutes rearranging the space you want it to occupy.
In addition to being attractive and easy to install, the recycler unit:
- Includes a 5 gallon bag that holds up to 36 12oz. cans and can also fit a milk jug
- Bag is soft-sided which allows for flexibility inside any cabinet
- Bag has a leak-proof liner and is machine washable to make it easy to clean in the event of any unexpected spills
- Bag and all product packaging is made from recyclable materials, and the product itself is recyclable.
- Has a convenient handle that allows you to easily carry it and empty wherever you keep your recyclables stored for pick-up
It’s size is a little deceiving; when I read that it should hold 36 soda cans, I was a little skeptical. But then I filled mine with two 4-packs of glass soda bottles, plus 2 energy drink cans, and it was only about one-third full. It really is a little workhorse of an item!
