So, yesterday I thought I might be losing my mind.  More so than usual, I mean.  I kept hearing this low thunder-like sound, but every time I heard it I turned to hubby and said, “Did you hear that?” and he looked at me like I was crazy.

It kept happening throughout the day, and finally I turned to everyone’s favorite source for news, Facebook.  According to multiple comments I wasn’t the only one who was hearing them.  While I was happy to know that it wasn’t in my head, I was then a little concerned with trying to figure out who was starting a war outside.

My husband thought it was probably some sort of training taking place at Fort Knox.  Fort Knox is about an hour away, and we do occasionally hear some of the maneuvers from out there so it wasn’t outside the realm of possibility.  I did wonder, however, if any of the base would be left standing after all the booms, if that was the case.

Facebook started filling up with lots of explanations: there was road work being done in part of town, activity at the rock quarry, and of course, Fort Knox.  While I certainly was curious about the sounds, I wasn’t actually worried.  Apparently that wasn’t the case for everyone however, as later that evening a local news team posted the following on their Facebook page:

The Sheriff’s Dept is asking the public to stop calling 9-1-1 about the booms. They believe the sounds are coming from EITHER Ft. Knox or a rock quarry. They could not tell us for sure the exact location. They say there is no other explanation for the booms. There is NO emergency in the county.

Now, I certainly never considered calling 9-1-1.  Because, you know, there was no shaking of the foundation, no people running through the streets screaming about the end of the world.

But.

I feel like the police should maybe NOT say “Hey, we really have no idea what’s making these loud booms but CLEARLY THERE IS NO EMERGENCY.”  Because, as you stated – YOU DON’T KNOW.

I re-read it a few times before bursting into laughter.  I’m sure the Sheriff’s Department put it much more eloquently than the news team’s status update, but the way it was written just struck my funny bone.  I read it to hubby who didn’t find it *quite* as funny, but did shake his head at the somewhat contradictory messaging.

So the next time you hear explosions or a series of loud booms that lasts all day and into the night, don’t worry and don’t call 9-1-1: there’s no emergency here.

  1. Wow that must have been nerve wracking!

  2. We’ve been hearing it out here in Mt. Washington for the last few nights, too. I figured it had to be Ft. Knox. Crazy how loud it is!

  3. I don’t think I’d be racing to call 911 either, but I certainly would be investigating to figure out what it was and where it was coming from. Was the source ever pinpointed?

  4. Oh wow – well glad you know it wasn’t just you.

  5. Ha! I would have laughed after reading that too. Hope it’s nothing ’emergency-like’. lol

  6. That would totally freak me out. I am always hearing stuff that no one else in the house hears.

  7. Gotta love unexplained sounds and no information from the authorities…

  8. Talk about nerve-wracking! OMG!

  9. Once my daughter and her fiance called 911 because there were loud noises shaking the house. It turned out to be a local fireworks display- they weren’t the only ones who called 911 either, according to the operator.

  10. WOW.. what a story.. that must have been nerve wrecking… WOW..

  11. I was hearing things like this the other day. We were thinking sonic booms maybe too since military isn’t too far.

  12. I would be freaking out. With my crazy hearing and anxiety, I would be on the phone with 911 non stop though!! LOL I always think something crazy is happening!!

  13. Wow, I would have been a nervous wreck! I’m kind of paranoid like that though.

  14. Crazy! I would have called, too.

  15. Oh goodness! We live close to the tornado warning and it broke a couple years back and was making awful sounds that made people call 911 lol. So ridiculous the things people will call 911 for sometimes. ha

  16. Eek…That would totally freak me out!

  17. We live by a military base so we are used to booms… but I can only imagine how scary it is if you don’t know what it is!

  18. That would be really funny if it wasn’t so crazy. i love hearing the news reporters be so dumb sometimes.

  19. that would have freaked me out!

  20. Wow, I would totally think I was crazy too, especially if I was the one hearing them… Thankfully there was no emergency, but still kinda scary, ha

  21. I would not be comfortable with not knowing what was going on. I would probably be worried.

  22. I have done this before! I used to live in between two bases and I was just really sensitive to the exercises, I guess. I’d constantly hear the booms when no one else would.
