Earlier this week I was at Walgreens to pick up some ice; it’s close to our house and easy to get in and out of when you need something quick like ice or a gallon of milk.  When I checked out the cashier gave me a coupon for a free $25 gift card when you transfer a prescription.

Walgreens

It reminded me that I hadn’t gotten around to changing pharmacies when we moved to our new place.  Our old pharmacy is now many miles away and with Walgreens so close, it just makes sense to switch.

As I was getting into my car I noticed on the marquee outside an advertisement for the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club.  We have insurance but even with it, our monthly prescriptions costs can be fairly high.  With A1 being Type 1 diabetic, she needs a number of scripts each month, and that can really add up.

So a couple of days ago when my hubby needed some meds for his cold I decided to go back to Walgreens and find out a little more about the Savings Club.  According to the ad in the flyer, the average savings for those using the Prescription Savings Club was over $170 a year.  It also said that if you didn’t save at least the cost of the membership that they would refund you the difference.

Both of those features sounded good, but I still wanted additional information so I went to speak to one of the pharmacists.  She explained that the club doesn’t replace anything you may already have currently.  If you carry both insurance and the Savings Club you simply ask the pharmacist to tell you which will be least expensive.  You can also use the card online or in stores – and it can be used with prescriptions you have mailed to your home!

Walgreens' Prescription Savings Club Discounts on Diabetic Meds

She gave me a list of over 700 generics that have even a greater savings over the thousands of brand-name and all generic medications that the Prescription Savings Club covers.  It may differ slightly from region to region so check with your local Walgreens.

I looked ours over and saw a number of diabetic medications on the list; I’m hoping that we’ll see some savings on those particular meds.  Using the pricing guide that was on the list she gave, we’ll pay $20 for a 90-day supply of one drug that currently costs $42.  And that’s just the one medication I could remember the cost of off the top of my head!

Signing Up For Walgreens' Prescription Savings Club

Based on all the things she told me, I decided to sign our family up.  The family membership is $35 and includes pets!  We are looking into getting a puppy, so that part will be really helpful down the road.  They also offer an individual plan for $20.

The actual sign up process was really easy – I didn’t even have to fill out any paperwork!  The very nice lady in the pharmacy simply asked me a few questions and entered my responses in the computer.  At the end I just had to sign my agreement and I was done!  The entire process took about 10 minutes – maybe less.

While I was going through the process I also found out that membership in the #rxsavingsclub also earns you a 10% bonus on purchases of Walgreens Brand, W Brand, Nice! Products, and in-store photofinishing services.  Just show your card when you make your purchases and the 10% is instantly credited to your card.  You can use the money on future purchases.
