Lincoln Declares Thanksgiving A National Holiday

I think most folks know the story of the origins of our modern Thanksgiving.  And some might know that President George Washington declared November 26th, 1789 as a day to give thanks.  After that, celebrations of thankfulness continued, but no official holiday was named.

Then President Lincoln – in an attempt to foster a sense of unity between the northern and southern states – declared Thanksgiving a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.  (Roosevelt later came along and changed it to the fourth Thursday for economic reasons.  So I guess you can thank Lincoln for Thanksgiving, and Roosevelt for Black Friday.)

Learn more about Lincoln by hitting the theaters this weekend and catching the movie!  Consider taking your older kids with you for an interesting history lesson!

Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln in the #LincolnMovie Trailer

The trailer for the DreamWorks Pictures/Twentieth Century Fox Lincoln movie is now available!  I was really excited to watch it and I can tell it’s going to be an excellent movie.  Even in the trailer you can feel the weight of the decisions that were pressing on Lincoln’s shoulders.  I have a feeling I’m going to need a packet of tissues while watching.

Interested in the story of Lincoln?

DreamWorks Pictures/Twentieth Century Fox movie Lincoln with Daniel Day Lewis

Steven Spielberg, who has brought us a number of amazing movies, has turned his attentions to the 16th President.  His new movie Lincoln, starring two-time Academy Award® winner Daniel Day Lewis in the title role (the resemblance is uncanny), focuses on the last four months of the President’s life.  A war is dividing the country and Lincoln must find a way to unite the people, end the war, and forever outlaw slavery.

Based in part on the book “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln” by Doris Kearns Goodwin, the movie also stars Sally Field, James Spader, Tommy Lee Jones, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  I really enjoy history, so I’m excited to see this movie, especially with the great cast they’ve put together.
