One of my favorite memories from elementary school field trips, were our adventures at the Francis Malcolm Science Center. It has an attached planetarium, which for the small, rural community I grew up in, was a pretty amazing thing.

So when the science center had a recent open house, I was excited to take Bubbles. She loves anything to do with science/space/nature so I knew she’d love it. And it gave me the opportunity to show her where my own interests in space and science had been fostered. Continue reading »

Carving pumpkins has been a family tradition since Bubbles was just little. She loves to look through pumpkin carving stencils and choosing just the right design for that year’s pumpkin. She cleaned out all the seeds and pulp, then hubs and I would do the transfer and carving.

This year my sister-in-law, Kate, invited us all up for a family pumpkin carving party. Bubbles thought long and hard about her pumpkin carving stencils choices and finally decided on a dinosaur.  Or as she constantly reminds me – “Mama, it’s not just a dinosaur, it’s a velociraptor.” Certain things are very important when you’re six. Growing up in Maine we didn’t have any local zoos.  We really didn’t even have any non-local zoos.  I had visited one in Canada and one in Florida while on vacation, but that was it.  So when I moved to Kentucky I was excited to find that it was just a quick trip to the Louisville Zoo.

Riding the carousel horses at the Louisville Zoo

Since then we have been to the Louisville Zoo on a number of occasions.  We have a list of “must do” items, like a ride on the carousel which only costs $2 to ride (it’s $3 for unlimited rides all day).  We then fill in the rest of the time with whatever animals are out that day, any shows that might be taking place, or new displays that are being rotated through like the LEGO creations we recently saw. This shop and my Angry Birds party ideas have been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser, Walmart Family Mobile. Opinions are mine, but the angry fun can be yours! #AngryForSavings #CollectiveBias

We’re kind of big fans of Angry Birds around here.  When she was around three, Bubbles was sitting with Daddy while he was playing Angry Birds on his phone.  She reached down and after a few minutes was successfully passing levels like a pro.

How to Host the Ultimate Angry Birds Party for the Whole Family!

Because Bubbles starts school next week we’ve been trying to pack as much extra fun into the last week or two of summer.  I had wanted to take her to see the Angry Birds movie in theaters but we didn’t get the chance.  So I decided we’d do an at-home Angry Birds movie party instead! Thank you to My Body Village for sponsoring this post on healthy habits. Making it fun keeps the kiddos engaged!

It’s hard to tell in some parts of the country – you know, the ones that just got an extra foot or so of snow in the last week or two – but spring is starting to bloom around us.  A lot of people use the onset of warmer weather as a way to renew the resolutions that have waned since the New Year.

Weekly healthy habits challenges from My Body Village - This week's challenge is to play a board game!

If your family could use a little nudge to get on track with their own healthy habits, My Body Village has some fun weekly challenges to help you out.  Each week focuses on a different organ and a way to help make it healthy or exercise it.  For example, this week’s challenge is from Raymond Brain, and he wants you to play a family board game.
