When I was a kid wearing my bike helmet and other kids bike safety gear was something I dreaded.  Helmets were big, boring and uninspired.  It was a little embarrassing to wear them because they just didn’t look all that great.

Wipeout's Dry Erase Bike Protective Gear is a fun and stylish way to keep kids safe. Kids bike safety gear has never been so cute - and so easy to personalize.

Getting my own daughter to wear her bike safety gear is much easier now, however, thanks to the fun dry erase productive gear available from Wipeout.  Thank you to Wipeout for partnering with us and providing us with fun kids bike safety gear. Continue reading »

2011 Holiday Gift Guide – Suggestions For Kids/Tweens
(Be sure to check out all the other great Gift Guide items and giveaways here.)

Are your kids interested in finances?  Do they wonder how money is earned – and how to spend it?  Would you like to give a gift that’s not only fun, but educational, too?

If the answers to those questions are yes, then you may be interested in the products that make up the Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace for Kids line.  The products – which include books, a bank, and a kit full of items – help kids develop financial expertise in fun, easy-to-learn manner.

The book series is based on Junior, a young boy who learns the valuable lessons of giving, sharing, and spending.  There are six illustrated books in the series that cover lessons like “Junior Discovers Spending,” “Junior Discovers Work,” and “Junior Discovers Integrity.”  The books are also available in an audio format and come in an aluminum lunchbox with Junior and his friends on the front.

The Financial Peace Jr. kit comes with wet-erase boards to keep track of savings and commission; an activity book with stories and games; magnets for giving, saving, and spending; a kid’s sized calculator; envelope system; and an instruction manual for parents. The kit helps parents teach kids how to implement the principles they read about in the book series.

Junior also has a bank, divided up into sections for Giving, Spending and Saving, which lets kids apply in real life what they are learning. The bank features the characters from the Junior book series and is clear plastic so that kids are able to see their money grow. The kit is great, too; the activities

I think these products would be great for any kid who is starting to be curious about how money works. I especially like the bank with it’s separate sections. Teaching kids from a young age to set aside money for both savings and charity is an important lesson, in my opinion. I also enjoyed that everything was approached in a fun way, and not “oh-my-goodness-if-you-don’t-save-now-you’ll-wind-up-living-in-a-box-during-your-retirement” kind of way. Honestly, I would have loved to have had this set when I was a kid.

Where to Buy:
All items are available from Dave Ramesy’s website.  The set of 6 Junior books is available for $59.99; the audiobooks are available in a collectible lunchbox for $39.95; Financial Peace, Junior retails for $19.95; and the bank is available for $19.95. You can purchase all three as one set if you purchase the Kid’s Monster Pack which is on sale for $49.95 (save 58%!).

Piggy Wiggies are collectible plush toys that are made from socks.  The company was launched earlier this year at the New York Toy Fair and has already had the distinction of having their product named Plush Toy of the Year by Creative Child.

Piggy Wiggies are named after members of the creator’s family.  Bingy and Lilly are sister Piggy Wiggies (named after the creator, Emma Louise, and her own sister).  Other family members are also represented such as Doodles (the Dad).  There are even limited edition holiday ones: Loved Santa and Santa Snorz (great stocking stuffers!).

These toys are recommended for ages 3 and up, and because of the buttons used for nostrils, I definitely agree with that recommendation.  However, Baby C. saw them and instantly fell in love.  At first she was only allowed to play with them while sitting on either my or hubby’s lap so we could monitor her play and ensure she wasn’t putting the buttons in her mouth.  She loved them so much, though, that she never wanted to set them down.  So we ended up cutting off the buttons.  Poor Piggy Wiggies!  It was the only way we were comfortable with letting her play with them, though, and it’s good that we did.  She’s grown so attached that she literally cries if I take one out of her hand long enough to just put her arm through her stroller strap.

Joining the Piggy Wiggies family are Howly Owlies.  The first one, Sad Sam, is available now; the rest should be available starting in December.

Like them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter to keep up with updates and other news.

Where to Buy
Piggy Wiggies start at $13 ($6.99 for key chains) and are carried at FAO Schwarz, various boutiques and zoos around the country, and online.
You can also win your choice of one large Piggy Wiggy and one key chain!  Just fill out the Rafflecopter form below.  Reminder: Rafflecopter takes a moment to load; if you don’t see the form after a minute, please try refreshing your browser.

It’s an exciting summer for a Disney fan like me.  First the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.  Now Disney*Pixar’s Cars 2 which revs into theaters in Disney 3D tomorrow, June 24th!  And right around the corner are a number of other Disney films that I’ll be sharing with you as we get closer to the release dates.

Cars 2 has star racecar Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) and tow truck Mater (voiced by Larry the Cable Guy) taking their friendship to exciting new places.  They head overseas together to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car.  The road to the championship is filled with potholes, detours and surprises when Mater gets caught up in international espionage!  Mater has to decide between helping Lightning McQueen or helping with the top-secret mission led by master British super spy Finn McMissile (voiced by Michael Caine) and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell (voiced by Emily Mortimer).  The journey leads Mater on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe being watched by the whole world.

The folks at Disney have put together a huge collection of great free activities for Cars 2 fans, as well.  There are crafts, recipes and activity sheets.  Check out the samples below and then download the entire collection here.

One of the things that I dislike about living where we are right now is that there isn’t enough space to have a dog.  I love dogs.  I literally grew up with a dog; my parents picked up their puppy just a few weeks before I came home, and we were pretty much inseparable.  Even though I’m told that I did confuse the poor thing when I first learned to talk, because my Mom would always tell the dog to “get away” and I thought his name was “Get”.  So I’d chase him around trying to hug him all while telling him to get away from me.

I’m very much looking forward to us finally finding a new place (yes, we’re still looking) where we have a yard big enough for a pup.  I really want Baby C to have a furry friend to grow up with.  Not only for the play and unconditional love experience, but I also think it teaches responsibility.

AnnieWear

If you’re like me and you’re a dog (or cat!) lover, then you are going to love the line of animal-themed baby and kids clothes and gifts at AnnieWear.  Not only are their designs adorable but a portion of all the sales are donated to animal rescue programs around the country.  The company is actually named after the founder’s own rescued dog, Annie, who came from the Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue.

The shirt I received came packaged very securely and wrapped in pretty hunter green tissue paper.  As I opened it, you couldn’t help but say “awww” when you saw the design on the shirt.

Opening my AnnieWear pacakge
And of course, once we put it on Baby C, I had to say “awww” again!
Baby C in her “good girl!” onesie
The AnnieWear signature “Good Girl!” onesie is a size 3-6 months, and as you can see, it’s just a smidgen big on Baby C who is 14 weeks, but that’s normal of most clothes for her right now.  It comes in black, white, lime, lavender and turquoise and goes up to size 12-18 months.  You can get it in both long and short sleeve versions.  The quality is also very nice; the shirt is 100% ringspun combed cotton and the design is silk screened with non-toxic durable ink.

We really like the shirt; it feels so soft and Baby C looked mighty comfortable in it.  And at $22.50 it makes a reasonably priced gift for any pet lover and their child.  I have a friend that is recently pregnant.  She is a big dog-lover and I can definitely see getting her an AnnieWear item as a gift once she knows and shares the gender.

Even though the prices are reasonable, it’s always better when you can get something on sale!  So AnnieWear has generously provided a 15% discount for all of you!  Just use promo code BLOG2011 at the checkout.
