The second week of summer vacation Bubbles’ elementary school offered a week of “space camp”. They worked on a number of space-themed activities and projects, including DIY Galaxy Jars.
When we set out on our Kentucky to Maine road trip, her Galaxy Jar was placed in one of the backseat cup holders so she could continue to look at it. There were very few things she specifically asked to pack within reach for the trip, so I knew it was a winner DIY.
We saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in theaters and we all loved it. When I found out we’d be receiving a copy of the DVD, I knew I wanted to make new DIY Galaxy Jars with Bubbles to celebrate.
DIY Galaxy Jars
Materials
- Glass jar with lid
- 2-3 colors of paint
- Cotton balls
- Glitter
Instructions
- Fill a glass jar with a lid (like a mason jar) about 1/3 full of water. Stir in a few drops of paint.
- Repeat with a different color. I suggest mixing the paint and water in a separate container to slowly pour in over the base color, as it’s easier. But you can also do it directly in the same jar.
- Continue to repeat until you are satisfied with the color layers and saturation.
- Screw on lid. You can dab on some hot glue if you want to ensure it’s completely leak-proof.
I let Bubbles choose the colors, so our jars this time were pink and purple. I think they’d also be beautiful with blues (to match the character Nebula from the movie) and greens, maybe even orange and pink together.
After our jars were done, we sat down and watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 again. Easily one of the best movies this year. I mean, “I’m Mary Poppins y’all!” If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it!
What colors will you use in your DIY Galaxy Jars? What did you think of GotG2?
