With Ashley living in Indianapolis and Austin having been away for his Army training our babysitting pool has been fairly tiny the last few months. Which means that date night is mostly celebrated at home after Bubbles has gone to bed.
I’ve been making homemade Sweet & Sour Chicken pretty regularly at my husband’s request. So for our most recent date night I decided to go a similar route and make homemade General Tso’s Chicken. This recipe comes together so fast and so easily that you’ll be making it for all your date nights.
Homemade General Tso Chicken
- 3 T soy sauce
- 3 T garlic hoison sauce
- 3 T rice vinegar
- 3 T ketchup
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- ½ tsp sesame oil
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup water
- 1 lb boneless chicken, cut into 1" pieces
- 4 T cornstarch
- 2 T olive oil
- sesame seeds, optional
- In a small bowl add cornstarch and chicken; toss to coat. Let sit 10 minutes to adhere.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet over medium.
- Add chicken and cook 8 minutes, turning occasionally, until lightly browned and cooked through.
- In a medium sauce pot whisk together brown sugar, soy sauce, hoison sauce, vinegar, ketchup, sesame oil, brown sugar, ground ginger and water. Bring to a boil, whisking constantly, and cook for 1 minute.
- Add browned chicken to the sauce and cook another 1-2 minutes, stirring to completely coat the chicken.
- Serve over white rice and top with sesame seeds, if desired.
While dinner was cooking I charged hubs with picking out our movie. I left him a list of movies that were still on our “we need to watch that someday” list and charged him with making the final selection. He flipped through our VUDU account to see what movies from our list were currently available. We either stream it to the TV or snuggle up on the couch and watch it on my laptop (especially if Bubbles is still up and watching a kid’s show).
A free monthly rental credit for VUDU ($7 value) comes as part of our Walmart Family Mobile PLUS plan. In addition to our free monthly VUDU movie the plan provides Unlimited Talk, Text, & Data (which includes up to 10GB of 4G LTE) all for $49.88.
I don’t think I’ve ever gone to the store when I haven’t texted my husband at least a couple of times asking him if this or that looked good to him, or “hey honey, I forgot to check, are we out of ketchup?” or any number of things. Plus very regularly I’ll see something on sale that will prompt me to bring up Pinterest on my phone and see if I can find a good recipe to utilize it. So a plan that includes unlimited text and data is a must.
Not that long ago I picked up the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime (on rollback from $99.92 down to just $79.92). It’s got a big, bright display and is very easy to navigate. I’ve had my old phone for a year and a half and I still couldn’t tell you where any documents I downloaded actually were stored. On this new Samsung everything (including my photos) is conveniently located under the “My Files” app.

You can get the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime (or other phones) along with your Walmart Family Mobile Starter Kit ($25) at most any Walmart. A new phone with Unlimited Talk, Text, & Data – plus that free VUDU movie credit – would be a great way to treat yourself when your tax rebate comes in. Don’t forget the ingredients for your General Tso Chicken while you’re there!
Your recipe looks just as good, if not better, than what I’d get from takeout. This is a must try! #client
Thank you Stephanie! If you do try it, let me know how you liked it!
Is this spicy like what you would get in a Chinese restaurant?
Hi Joni! It’s not overly-spicy, but you can add more red pepper flake to increase the level of heat if you’d like!
this is an easy recipe to follow. And the ingredients are what I have on hand
