Bubbles is already getting to where she has an opinion about how things look and are designed. She tells me frequently what she considers “to be fashion” whether it’s with her clothes (or my clothes) or the decor of her room.

A couple of weeks ago she told me she wanted to have her bathroom be “more fashion”. As it’s mostly been used as a guest bathroom she was right in that it wasn’t really designed with kid appeal. After some discussion she decided she’d like to see more purple.

DIY Dinosaur Topped Jars are easy to make. Just glue small plastic dinos to the top of jar lids, spray paint and done!

I still need to find time to shop for all the supplies I’ll need for a full bathroom redo, but for now I thought I could provide her with a few fun touches. In the last few years I noticed animal topped mason jars becoming popular and I decided to make some DIY Dinosaur Topped Jars to use as storage while adding some fun kids bathroom decor.

Supplies you need for DIY Dinosaur Topped Jars: Glass jars with lids, adhesive, spray paint, and small plastic dinosaur figurines. Makes for very easy kids bathroom decor!

Glass jars with smooth lids
Small plastic dinosaurs
Adhesive (like super glue)
Spray praint

Tutorial:

  1. If you can find jars with lids that are one piece, those work the best.  If you have a mason jar-style lid first run a thin line of glue around the inside edge and glue the lid to the rim so that it doesn’t come apart.  Let set (about 15 minutes).Use adhesive glue or super glue to attach plastic dinosaurs to the top of your jar lids
  2. Dab a little glue on the bottom of the dinosaurs’ feet and press one onto the top of each lid.  Hold for a second until they’re in the position you want, then let the adhesive fully set (I waited 30 minutes to be sure).Spray paint the lids and dinosaurs with spray paint in your color of choice
  3. In a well-ventilated area (outdoors is preferred) lay your dinosaur-topped lids out on some newspaper.  Spray each one with a light, even coat of spray paint.  You will probably need 2-3 coats, depending on the spray paint and the color of the plastic dinosaurs you use.  I waited about 15-20 minutes between each coat. You can use jars of all sizes and shapes. Just find plastic dinosaurs in a size that will compliment your container.
  4. Let the lids dry completely.  I found that the lids dried really fast, but the dinosaurs remained a tacky for awhile longer, so test them carefully after an hour or so.Once the paint on your lids is dry fill your jars with hair ties, adhesive bandages, jewelry - whatever you'd like. In addition to storage, they make easy and inexpensive kids bathroom decor, too.
  5. Fill your jars with various accessories like bandages, hair ties, etc.

Need someplace to store the extra roll of bath tissue? Find a larger plastic dinosaur and spray paint it to match your jars. Easy peasy!

While I was shopping at Walmart I also found some bigger plastic dinosaurs for just a dollar each.  Originally I was just going to spray paint them, too, and place them around as more kids bathroom decor.  But when I set one of the dinosaurs on the tank of the toilet I realized it would be a cute way to hold the spare roll of TP.

Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong

Bubbles bathroom gets stocked with Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong Bath Tissue.  It has a unique Cleanstretch construction that limits tissue ripping and separation and for kids just learning how to tear it off the roll having a tissue that’s not going to shred in their hands is a nice bonus.

Cute & easy DIY Dinosaur Topped Jars make great storage and kids bathroom decor

I love the shimmer that came through from the big dinosaur after it was painted.  And I thought the jars turned out really cute, too (hubby even complimented my spray painting skills). I used purple because that’s what Bubbles had asked for you, but you could use any color you wanted that matched your kids bathroom decor.

  4. What a GREAT idea! You’ve really inspired me! I bet my kids would use jars with cute dinos (or other toys) on the lid a lot more then the boring jars I currently have in the bathroom or in their bedrooms. Thanks for the tutorial and idea.

  5. You did a great job! This would be a wonderful way to repurpose the toys we purchased at yard sales, or whatnot, that are a bit scuffed from previous love. We have a big toilet roll holder that has a pole for storing extra rolls…..not nearly as cute as your idea.
