Over the weekend I spent some time working on more of my menu for game day.  When I’m trying something new, or even just a variation on something I make often, I like to give them a trial run to ensure they work out the way I think they will.  No one around here minds needing to eat some of the same things twice, I promise.

I’ve been kind of loving the ButterFinger Peanut Butter Cups since they came out, and when I saw the new ButterFinger Peanut Butter Cups Minis at Walmart not that long ago an idea started to form.  My Mom makes an amazing chocolate trifle with crushed up candy bars.  I thought it would be perfect to replace the candy bars with chopped up ButterFinger Peanut Butter Cups Minis so I picked up a bag to bake with (as well as a smaller bag to snack on).

Individual Trifle Recipe

Individual Butterfinger Peanut Butter Cups Minis trifle recipe #GameTimeMVP

  • 1 cake mix, prepared according to the box directions, then cooled
  • 1 container of whipped topping
  • 1/2 cup ButterFinger Peanut Butter Cups Minis, roughly chopped

  1. After cake has cooled, break (or cut) into chunks. Fit snugly into the bottom of your prepared trifle dish.
  2. Spoon whipped topping over first layer of cake; smooth.
  3. Sprinkle some of the chopped candy over the whipped topping.
  4. Repeat with more cake, more whipped topping, and finishing with more chopped candy.
  5. Depending on the size of the dishes you use, you’ll probably have anywhere from 2 to 5 layers

I happened to have a cake mix on hand that had both a brown and orange mix included which I thought was perfect because they’re the colors of the ButterFinger Peanut Butter Cups Minis.  But you could easily just use a chocolate mix, or one chocolate and one white cake mix tinted with orange food coloring if you want to recreate it exactly.  Pop over to my Instagram account and see how to assemble trifle desserts easily.

You may also be thinking “so, you’ve been talking a whole lot already this year about healthy choices, how exactly does candy and cake fit into that?”.  My overarching feeling for the year is about balance.  That means you can have your cake and eat it to – you just can’t have all the cake.  This individual trifle recipe is perfect for portion control because you can have an entire treat all in one small serving dish.

Again, I’m loving milkshake shooters not only for the taste, but the portion control.  Milkshakes are one of my weaknesses; by serving them in shot glasses I get to enjoy the treat while tricking my brain into thinking it had a full dessert when the glass is empty.  The flavors of the Edy’s Grand Touchdown Sundae ice cream are perfect when blended together, too, including the little football-shaped chocolates inside.

While I was making the desserts, I baked up another DiGiorno pizza.  This one was the Cheese Stuffed Crust Five Cheese Pizza and I think it’s my favorite of the cheese stuffed crust varieties.  The blend of those five cheeses was just so good!  I cut them into pizza “sticks” to make them easier to grab-and-go while watching the game (plus I’m a “dipper” and sometimes like to dip my pizza into marinara or ranch).
