While I was growing up, my Mom was a stay-at-home Mom. Before my brothers and I were born, though, she had a career as a stylist. As a young teen, I remember sitting under one of those salon-style dryers in the comfort of our own home, feeling pretty cool.
Having a stylist Mom meant there was very little reason to go to a salon, as I had my own personal hair-care expert under the same roof. She shared a lot of hair tips and tricks with me over the years, and many of them that were applicable to an on-the-go teen are equally as applicable to my life now as a busy mom. Now I want to share them with you!
Hair Tips for Busy Moms
Ponytails are your friend. Ponytails used to be considered lazy. But fortunately, now they’re in style! If you want something more than just your basic pony, a quick search on YouTube for ponytail hairstyles will provide you with a whole slew of tutorials (some of them with millions of views, proving that many of us just want a simple ‘do).
Shower at night. Not only does this save you time during the crazy morning rush, but it gives you a chance to add a little lift. I was not blessed with volume (something I lament especially on a humid day), but by putting wet hair into a pony tail or pinning up a few curls, when you wake up the next morning you can at least fake it a little.
Don’t shower every night. It’s healthy to give your hair a day or two between washing, as it helps maintain the natural oils your hair needs. If you need a little something to make your hair feel fresh in between, try dry shampoo. It may, in fact, be one of the best inventions ever.
Use a towel – not your hand – to dry your hair. If you use a blow dryer to dry your hair, do yourself a favor and use a towel and not your bare hand. Not only will your hair dry faster, but you don’t end up transferring the oil from your hands to your clean hair. For those of us with hair that tends to be more oily than dry, it’s extra-useful.
Have the right tools. A set of good bobby pins can really save the day. Tuck back those loose wisps when you’re growing out your bangs, hold a braid together while you’re chasing after the kids, lots of ways. And of course, a great shampoo can help save you time by giving you your preferred base: straighter, more volume, a color-extender, etc.

It never occurred to me about the oils from my hands going into my hair! I’m glad to know ponytails are the in style now because I rarely even do my hair but if I do, it would be something simple like that.
As a guy, I probably am not the one to ask for tip for hair. Wash-n-go is where I’m at!
I always take time out for hair and make up. It makes me feel better about myself and that makes my day better
Pony tails are definitely my friend. I have always taken showers at night. I love my sleep in the mornings and hate to give it up.
Ponytails are my go to “style”. They are so easy to do and often I only leave the house to go get my son or go to the grocery store so it’s just easy.
We are Suave users in our home too. They leave hair clean and soft without leaving your pockets empty.
