Growing up, one of the things I most looked forward to during warmer months was the dairy bar opening.  One of the local dairies in our area – Houlton Farms Dairy – would open up a small store front in a neighboring town and serve homemade ice cream, milkshakes, and other delicious offerings.  Their homemade chocolate ice cream was one of my absolute favorites.

On the menu were a few other items that I really didn’t ‘get’ as a kid – treats made with sherbet.  They didn’t contain any ice cream!  I mean, why go to an ice cream shop and not get ice cream.  As I got older, though, I completely understood:  a way to indulge without blowing your healthy goals.
I wanted to recreate one recently so I went looking for 7UP at Walmart.  What I found was a pleasant surprise.  Some of my favorite sodas – 7UP, Sunkist, A&W and Canada Dry – now come in a 10 calorie variety!  These four Ten Calorie DPSG products would help make my beverage even more figure-friendly.

Lime Sherbet + 10 Calorie 7UP = Fizzy Fruit Float Recipe #TENways

Making this Fizzy Fruit Float recipe is really easy.  Grab your favorite citrus sherbet – lime, lemon, etc. – and a bottle of Ten Calorie 7UP.  Scoop the sherbet into a tall glass and slowly pour the 7UP over the top.  Add a fun straw and maybe garnish with a wedge of lemon or lime and you’re done!  A delicious and refreshing treat for those warm days that lets you treat yourself without going overboard.

Because I feel like that’s one of the hardest parts of a healthy lifestyle: not feeling deprived.  Some of you may have the willpower to simply say “Well, no more chocolate for me”, but I just can’t bring myself to say that.  And I don’t feel like I should have to, you know?  There has to be a compromise.  So here are some additional tips I have for how to enjoy the occasional treat and still stay on track.

Slimming Tips

  • Go for the kids meal.  Salads aren’t always the healthiest option at a restaurant or take-out place, and sometimes, you just want the fries!  I’ve found that most kids meals provide more than enough food to satisfy my hunger, and the smaller portions keep the calories in check.
  • Have your chocolate.  Reach for the dark chocolate if you like it; it’s supposed to have more health benefits than regular milk chocolate.  But no matter what chocolate you choose, go for quality instead of quantity.  One really decadent truffle is going to seem like more of a special occasion, and since you’re paying a tiny bit more, you’re unlikely to eat too many.
  • Downsize.  Love cupcakes?  Buy a mini one.  Are chips your thing?  Buy one of the small single-serve ones.  It’s okay to snack on your favorite thing, you just have to watch the portions.
  • Drink smart.  Of course water is the best way to hydrate yourself.  But when you want something with a little fizz and flavor, the four Ten Calorie DPSG sodas are a smart choice.  They come in cute little gray cans that will provide the same taste as full-calorie soda, but that fit in better with your goals.
