For awhile now I’ve used a pedometer to track the steps I take during the day. It’s definitely a good way to encourage yourself to take the stairs when possible, or to circle the block a second time during your afternoon walk. They’re a little clunky, though, and depending on where you clip it, I had a tendency to knock it off when I’d walk.
When I saw the new Misfit Shine activity monitor, however, I knew I’d found better than the perfect replacement for my old-school pedometer. First of all, it’s incredibly sleek and stylish. It’s made of aircraft-grade aluminum and comes in grey, black, topaz, and champagne.

Additionally, it isn’t something I’m going to accidentally knock off or get caught on something. The Shine device itself is only 27.5mm x 3.3mm x 27.5mm (about the size of a quarter) and weighs a light 9.4g. To wear, you pop it into the included clasp and hook it wherever you want. Additionally, you can purchase a sport band, leather band, or necklace to hold the Shine.
I’ve been wearing mine with the sport band and I love it. It looks more like a piece of jewelry or watch than it does a fitness tracker. There’s actually no “display” on the face of the Shine, just a halo of 12 LED lights. The lights alert you to your progress and also show you the time, allowing the Shine to double as a watch.
Aside from looking cool, though, what can the Shine do? A lot, as it turns out.
Misfit Shine & App
To start, the Shine measures your steps, distance traveled, calorie burn, and even sleep habits. You can sync the device with the Shine app to set daily goals for yourself. You can monitor your progress by tapping the Shine and observing the LEDs (3 lit LEDs = 25%, 6 lit LEDs = 50%, etc.) or by checking the app on your phone.
If you aren’t handy to your iPhone or iPad (the Shine Android app is coming very soon), no worries. The Shine device itself will hold approximately 30 days of information, allowing you to monitor your workouts over time. The app has an unlimited storage capacity so you’ll be able to see long-term results.
Water-resistant to 50 meters, the Shine can also track your swimming, plus cycling, soccer, tennis, and basketball. Swimming is one of my favorite activities so I’m excited about being able to wear it in the pool when the weather warms up again. And you don’t even have to charge the Shine; it runs on a coin cell battery that will last about four months before needing to be replaced.
