I received a preview copy of Teen Beach Movie in order to facilitate my review.  All opinions and words are my own.

What happens when you take a themed musical and breath Disney magic on it?  You get Teen Beach Movie, a fun new musical that the entire family can enjoy together.  It goes without saying how much I love Disney movies and this one did not disappoint.

Disney’s Teen Beach Movie is kind of like Grease meets West Side Story and they all decide to hang out on the beach.  For someone that loves the old musicals (I seriously couldn’t begin to count the number of times I have watched Grease), it was a great premise.  Unlike some of the musicals of the 70s and 80s, though, this is much more family-friendly all the way through, making it a good way to introduce your kiddos to the genre.

Disney's Teen Beach Movie

The movie opens with high school sweethearts Mack (Maia Mitchell) and Brady (Ross Lynch) enjoying the lazy days of summer by doing a little surfing.  Brady intends for them to enjoy every day of summer to the fullest but soon Mack’s aunt shows up and Mack is forced to tell Brady the truth: she is leaving the next day to attend a private school she promised her aunt that she would attend.

Determined to enjoy a 40-foot wave scheduled to hit the beach, Mack heads into the ocean for a last surf just hours before her plane is supposed to leave.  As Brady and her grandfather look on they realize the waves are getting too strong and Brady hops a jet ski and goes out to save her.  They both end up knocked into the ocean and upon washing up on the beach realize that something isn’t quite right.

Mack and Brady have been transported from their beach to the beach of “Wet Side Story”, one of Brady’s all-time favorite movies.  Confused, they find themselves almost immediately a part of a musical number.  Brady, of course, is enjoying taking part but Mack is upset and decides to try and find a way home.  She assumes that as they came in during a storm, a storm would be the way home again, and Brady shares that there’s a storm at the end of the movie.  He tries to convince her to relax until then, but Mack still is very uncomfortable at first.

Later that night the surfers and bikers both descend on Big Momma’s – a hangout they both want for their own group.  Brady and Mack inadvertently change the course of the movie, having prevented Lela and Tanner from falling for each other (literally).  They know that in order for them to get home, they must somehow mend the movie rift and set the storyline straight, or they may be stuck there forever.

The songs paired with choreographed routines that pepper the movie will have you wanting to get up on your feet and dance along.  Bubbles did a lot of dancing and at one point even ran to get her guitar so that she could “be a rockstar, too”.  She very seriously studied the moves and tried her best to duplicate them as best as a 2-year-old can.  By the way, for fans of “So You Think You Can Dance?” you’ll recognize a familiar face playing Rascal.
