Picture this: it’s the middle of August in Florida. The mercury is bubbling as temperatures climb past the 105°F mark. My parents, brothers, and I are about to move me into the dorms for my freshman year of college. The building, being a national historic landmark located in the oldest city in America, has no air conditioning (yes, you read that right – I was about to live in a building, in Florida, with no A.C.). My dorm room is on the first floor, which is technically the second floor.
We drove down as a family from Maine with a car full of my stuff. But five people doesn’t leave much room for “stuff” so I had also shipped a number of boxes that were waiting for us. Waiting for us to carry down a street, up two long flights of stairs, and down to the far end of a long hall. In 105°F heat (in case you missed that part). While trying to keep track of my two very active young brothers.
Many a parent had all but melted by the end of the day and I felt so bad for them. They were exhausted from the moving while all their freshmen were getting ready to go off to hall meetings and Disney trips and movies in the courtyard. I remember my own parents, collapsed in chairs, looking more like they had run a marathon in parkas rather than moving a daughter into a dorm.
But things that go around do have a way of coming around, as I was quick to find out when we moved Ashley into college a couple of years ago. This is Kentucky and not Florida but that didn’t keep the temperatures down and it was easily in the high 90s and low 100s. She was on the fourth floor and though there were many hands we all felt like we were about to pass out before the end of it.
