Collecting books for kids in the Big Help Book Drive!

Simple Service Project - Collecting Books For Kids #NickCFK

Last week I shared with you the newest Champions for Kids project that my family and I were participating in.  Being a huge fan of reading and books, I was excited that the September SIMPLE Service project was all about collecting books for kids in need!  As part of the project, I hosted a Nickelodeon Big Help Book Drive.

I started by shopping at Walmart for a few books to seed our donation.  There were lots of books to choose from, and we ended up selecting a few Olivia books and a couple of Dora books.  You can check out my entire shopping experience in my Google+ Album.

After we returned home, I put out the call on Facebook, Twitter, and email.  I asked friends and family to donate new or gently-used books, and they didn’t disappoint!  So far we’ve collected 22 books.  I also have a couple of friends from back in Maine that have mailed boxes with books that haven’t arrived yet.  When those arrive we should have a total of around 50!

Can you guess who picked out the “If You Give A Dog A Donut” book? Yep – Bubbles!

The books that we collected (and the ones that are on the way!) were taken to Sunrise Children’s Services.  Sunrise helps find foster families for kids in need, and then they stay partnered with them to provide support.  Our donations will be given to the kids as they’re placed in their foster homes.  I know that a lot of kids in situations like that often have to leave with the clothes on their back.  So having something that is “theirs” could be kind of comforting.  It also ensures that they have access to books, which many of them didn’t previously.

The ladies working in the office were so pleased with the books I was able to drop off.  And they were excited to know that I’d be back next week with more!  Due to the privacy of the kids they work with, photos of people aren’t permitted.  But I took a photo of their building to share with you.

Did any of you collect books for the Big Help Book Drive?  I’d love to hear your stories if you did!

  1. I need to get more books, my son loves to look at them. It looks like you got some great books!

    • Walmart has a lot to choose from, Katie, and they’re pretty reasonably priced. If you have a Half-Price Books, you might want to look there, as well. Most of the books are used, but they’re half-off the retail price, and kids can be pretty rough on them, anyway!

  2. What a great drive giving the kids the love of books. You should be very proud of yourself!

    • Thank you, Mel! We were happy to be able to take them, and really appreciate the lovely thank you note we received in the mail. It made me tear up! It’s so nice to be able to help someone with something as simple as a book.

  3. What a great organization and so deserving of your donation. I hope the books keep pouring in because I know these children need a bright spot in their life and I love that you are giving them just that!
