Soft Molasses Drop Cookies with Maple Glaze

- 1 egg
- ¼ cup shortening or margarine
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup molasses
- ½ cup cold water
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tsp. ginger
- ½ tsp. salt
- ½ tsp. nutmeg
- ½ tsp. ground cloves
- ½ tsp. cinnamon
- ½ tsp. baking soda
- ½ cup confectioners sugar
- 1 T milk
- 1 tsp. maple flavoring
- walnut pieces or halves, optional
- In a large bowl mix together the egg and shortening.
- Add in flour, ginger, salt, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and baking soda. Mix.
- Stir in water and molasses to make a thick dough.
- Place in the refrigerator and chill for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 400.
- On a baking sheet drop dough by small spoonfuls or a small scoop (which helps keep the cookies uniform in size).
- Bake for 8-10 minutes.
- While cookies bake, make your glaze by whisking together confectioners sugar, milk, and maple flavoring.
- While cookies are still slightly warm, spoon on or drizzle with glaze.
- Top with a walnut piece, if desired.
