Bubbles has been very excited about Valentine’s Day this year. I think part of it is how closely it both follows Christmas and precedes her birthday. It’s just an exciting time of year.
She has been asking what we’re going to do to celebrate Valentine’s Day, and as this is the first year she’s showed much interest, I’m leaving it up to her. (Within reason, of course.) So while that’s unlikely to mean a fancy dinner out for hubby and I, it will mean a lot of family fun for all of us, and I prefer that any day of the week, anyway.
Number one of her wishlist is to have a picnic. It’s not exactly picnic weather outside, so we’re going to have an Indoor Valentine’s Day Picnic party. For our entertainment, one thing we will probably do is to watch a love-themed movie or show. Here are 10 family-friendly Valentines movies and shows to choose from.
Lady and the Tramp
One of Disney’s most classic films, Lady and the Tramp doesn’t always get the spotlight it deserves. But at this time of year, it’s hard to overlook such a classic tale of love. The movie is perfectly sweet for all ages and the soundtrack is beautiful, too!
Beauty and the Beast
Another classic Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast is a great love story. Against all odds and coming from very suspect circumstances, the Beast is taught how to love someone other than himself. And there are few more breathtaking animated scenes than that of Belle sweeping down that grand staircase in her gorgeous ball gown.
Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown
The Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown DVD actually includes three shorts. The title feature, plus “You’re In Love, Charlie Brown” and “It’s Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown”. There’s a reason Charlie Brown is still much-loved after more than six decades. The tales are full of heart and it’s always fun to root for Charlie Brown, who is a bit of an underdog.
Ever After: A Cinderella Story
This is one of my favorite tellings of the Cinderella story. Drew Barrymore is the perfect combination of sweet and headstrong, and while she gets a fairy tale ending, it’s because she chose it for herself. The movie is rated PG-13 for mild language (one use each of hell and damn), but there’s no nudity; just keep that in mind when you’re deciding if Ever After: A Cinderella Story is right for all your kiddos.
The Princess Bride
Oh, that Westley and Buttercup. Will they ever get their timing right and share the love they have for one another? The Princess Bride is one mishap after another, with kidnappings, a poisoning, swashbuckling pirates, and, of course, a dastardly villain. Everything is completely tongue-in-cheek, however, and the movie will have your littles (and you) holding their sides laughing.
Shrek
Shrek is, for certain, an unconventional love story: not many start in a swamp. But Shrek is great fun and a classic in it’s own right. It also shows that love comes in all shapes and sizes. Your kiddos (especially if you have boys) will give you bonus points for a Valentines movie that has ogre boogers.
Frozen
Yes, we’re still talking about Disney Frozen well over a year later, and there’s no signs of it slowing. There’s a reason for that. I personally think Frozen is one of Disney’s best and it’s perfect for Valentine’s Day because it’s not only a cautious tale (Anna and Prince Hans), but shows romantic love (Anna and Kristoff), platonic love (Olaf’s “worth melting for” with Elsa), and sisterly love.
