We live in a completely different world than I grew up in.  I saw my first computer – the green screen kind – when I was in 3rd grade.  By the time I was in high school, we were building computers from the ground up and selling them as part of a school project.  Somewhere in the middle of there, the world started to go even more digital with email and the start of the Internet.  It was a very exciting time and I feel fortunate that I grew up as the technology was evolving.

Use technology to share awesome #ShareAwesome

It’s different for the generations that have come after me, though.  Ashley and Austin grew up on Facebook, and Bubbles will never know a time when people didn’t constantly provide updates on their lives through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more.  This opens up entirely new parenting challenges as we try and teach them how to use it safely and respectfully.

I love technology and all the ways it makes our lives easier and more connected.  Before I had to snap a picture, take the film in to be developed, wait days until it was done, pick up the prints and hope they turned out okay, then drop them in an envelop to mail to my parents who would receive them three days later.  Now I whip out my smart phone and capture a dozen fun memories, then text them to my Mom who can enjoy them instantly.

If you follow me on social media – especially Instagram – you see me share a lot of those moments there, too.  Bubbles likes “helping” me select what images to post and to look through what everyone else has posted.  It gives me a great opening to talk to her about what is and isn’t appropriate for the world to see, and the types of responses we leave for others.

The National PTA has partnered with LifeLock to share awesome ways families can have an open conversation about making safe, positive decisions when using digital tools.  It’s all part of having a happy, healthy lifestyle.  They want to celebrate families and students that choose to use digital media for good, and they’re doing that through the #ShareAwesome contest.

Simply snap a photo of an awesome moment in your day and share it on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the #ShareAwesome hashtag.  Students who enter the #ShareAwesome contest between September 15 – November 30, 2014 will have a chance to win fantastic prizes, including tablets and a $2,500 scholarship!

  1. Technology sure has changed the world! I remember years ago when my husband had a pager and we thought that was awesome. And I remember my first cell phone having an antenna that we had to slide up and down.

I think it’s great that the PTA and LifeLock have partnered to help parents and kids make safe decisions when it comes to technology.
